This Grey Lynn Pump Track project was one of the first locally-led community projects that Sport Auckland got involved in. The Grey Lynn Pump track started life as a patch of dirt in an inner city park. The local community, led by parents Scott Kuegler and Paul Wacker, formed the Grey Lynn Pump Track Association which had a vision and a dream of getting kids active while having fun on their bikes.
Following the initial concept, the community worked collaboratively with a whole host of partners including us. We played a significant advocacy/influencing role and assisted in sourcing funds for the project.
The Waitemata Local Board was an avid supporter of the concept and could visualise the linkage to their local Greenways plan and the opportunity to help crystallise a community-led project. With their strong support this led to other funders and partners joining in, with donations of materials and time that led to the track being built. A truly collaborative process, with the local community, Sport Auckland, Council and others coming together to provide a great, well-used asset for the community.
